How to Dress Like a Young Guyanese Bai

This article needs to be converted to wikiHow format as specified by the Writer’s Guide. You can help by editing it now and then removing this notice. Notice added on 5-20-2008.
Are you in your teens, 20s, or 30s even? Have you ever wanted to dress like a true coolie bai? Well if you do, this guide will show you how. Guyanese bai’s follow different trends: hip hop, prep, etc. However, there is one similarity between all Guyanese bai’s: They think they’re sweet bai’s.

Steps

  1. Wear jewelry . Guyanese bai’s between the ages of 15 and 40 do not usually wear gold jewelry, which is common amongst the older Guyanese folk. However, if you are under 40, you need a silver chain for around your neck and a silver bracelet around either wrist.
  2. Wear shades. Shades are a must for all Guyanese bai’s. Transition lenses are preferred for those who wear glasses. You’ll find that most Guyanese bai’s who wear glasses have transition lenses. If you don’t wear glasses, you need to get yourself a pair of shades. Ones that look cool, but are not overly flasy and big. You need small, oval shaped shades. Those are the Guyanese shades.
  3. Do not wear a particular style or brand of pants, but most wear loose fitting jeans. Gangsta Guyanese bai’s wear extremely baggy jeans that hang below their waist.
  4. Wear dress shirts. If you want to be a TRUE TRUE Guyanese sweet bai, you need to buy some dress shirts. Ones that look expensive and expertly tailored.
  5. Do not wear a particular brand or style of shoes, but young Guyanese usually wear a fresh pair of Nike Air Force Ones, or some other expensive basketball shoes.
  6. Style your hair. There is no particular “Guyanese” hairstyle for young Guyanese bai’s, but all Guyanese bai’s have one ting in common with their hair: it has loads of gel in it. If you want to be a true Guyanese bai, you need to put lots of gel in your hair to attract de gyal dem.

Tips

  • Always make sure you look fresh and clean. Guyanese gyals don’t like scruffy Guyanese bai’s.
  • Jewelry and shades are an absolute must. Guyanese bai’s cannot do without them. Stick to silver jewelry if you’re under 40.

Things You’ll Need

  • Gel
  • Expensive dress shirts
  • Silver jewelry
  • Nice shades (not flashy or huge)
  • Nice shoes
  • Nice pants

Sources and Citations

  • Source: Myself. A true Guyanese bai. Many years of experience as a sweet bai.

How to Choose the Right Griptape

This article will help you choose the griptape that will fit you the best.

Steps

  1. Decide if you need a very gritty, grippy griptape; if your shoes are not particularly tough, a less gritty griptape is recommended, such as Jessup.
  2. If your shoes are very tough and you need a lot of grip a much grittier griptape such as Black Magic (definitely the grittiest) is recommended. Tougher shoes include Nike and DC. Weaker shoes include Vans, Ecko, Etnies, and Adio.
  3. If you want something that is mostly on the fence, not too gritty, not too smooth, consider PIG, Iron Horse or MOB griptape.

Tips

  • Gritty griptape such as Black Magic is fairly destructive of your shoes. Be sure that if you pick this, your shoes are very durable at the soles and the areas that rub the board during any kind of trick that you’ll be doing.
  • The grittier the griptape, the more “control” you will you have of your board. This is not necessarily a plus for some people.
  • Skateshops usually have a few selections of griptape, depending on the shop. Ask an employee about which brands they have.

Warnings

  • The only warning for griptape is keep your skin away from it! Griptape burn is not fun.

How to Go from Prep Chick to Scene Girl

Lots of people are beginning to transition from prep to scene. If you are reading this article, chances are you want to do the same. This can be tricky because you may be called a “poser”. So take it slow and follow these week-to-week steps.

Steps

  1. Change your music style. Listen to music such as punk rock, alternative, rap, techno, and screamo. Scene style isn’t about following the mainstream, so try searching around MySpace and finding new and undiscovered bands.
  2. Learn the lingo. Use cute little kid words that people normally wouldn’t say. And do not forget to overuse them. Also, do not copy someone else’s words.
  3. Start wearing scene makeup. Black eyeliner and bright coloured eyeshadow is the way to go.
    • Note: Do not go from wearing natural tones one day to totally punked out eye makeup the next. This will cause people to notice, and it will seem like you are trying way too hard. Start with more mascara than usual, then slightly more eyeliner, and go from there.
  4. Start buying the clothes. Band T-shirts and bright coloured random shirts –from stores such as American Apparel, Forever 21, Urban Outfitters and Delias– are always in style. Make sure you always wear skinny jeans.
    • You are going to need super bright accessories and necklaces.
    • Buy bright coloured ballet flats and/or Vans.(converse work too)
  5. Get scene hair. If necessary, wait longer than 6 weeks for this change. Remember, your hair needs to be original, colourful, and preferably do-it-yourself.

Tips

  • You must have a MySpace or Stickam account. Be popular on either, just be sure not to post to many annoying bulletins, or make a fool of yourself on Stickam. Add tons of friends on MySpace and you’ll soon become popular.
  • You must get some skinny jeans. Preferably black, dark grey or dark blue.
  • Acceptable shoes are nike dunks, ballet flats, boots and old school addidas.
  • Get rid of the Hollister and Fitch clothes, and any clothes that are a major prep trend.
  • People will be mean to you. Part of being scene is being able to get over it.
  • Try light (almost white) or nude lips. Black lips can be fun when going out to party and such.
  • Put a little foundation on your lips to make them nude.
  • Hairclips, hair bows, ribbons — put those in your hair and have layers.
  • Make friends with scene kids and attend shows.
  • Give the transition some time! Don’t be prep one day and scene the next because chances are, you’ll be called a poser.
  • Be friends with scene kids, hipsters and br00tal kids.
  • Know who scene queens are, but dont obsess over them.
  • Buy some bright colored or gold accessories such as jewelry, bags, etc.

Warnings

  • If you don’t know the music that is popular with the current scene, you will be harshly ridiculed by the real scene kids.
  • If you don’t think you can take people being mean to you then don’t do this.
  • Be prepared to be called a poser, even if you change slowly and gradually. You’ll especially be hated upon by already-scene kids.

How to Look Street/Ghetto

This page has been nominated for deletion with the reason of:“Not a how-to. Article does not appear to be how-to / instructional in nature”. FOR GIRLS!!! No matter what race you are, ’street’ or ‘ghetto’ is an awesome look!! Here are some tips on how to rock the club!

Steps

  1. Hair/makeup: If you’re african american, weaves always look good, as well as just two braids. If you’re white, two braids or unkempt, or straight hair looks great. Also, really wavy hair is attractive. Wear big scarves or bandannas around your forehead. Makeup doesn’t really matter for this cool look, but mascara and a little bit of eyeliner is always attractive.
  2. Apparel: Good brands for street/ghetto clothing are South Pole, Baby Phat, Dereon, and G Unit. They can be found at department stores such as Sears, Dillards, Macys, and JC Penneys. Can’t afford that? No problem. Look for clothes at places you can afford. Look for bandannas, capris cropped at the knees, flared jeans, tight tanktops and baggy t-shirts.
  3. Speech: Speech is probably the most important thing of all! Talk less proper, and break the grammar rules! in stead of ‘anybody’ say nobody’. Say ‘ain’t’ but not like a western hick. Say things like, ‘I don’t want no pizza’. Spell ‘air’ like, ‘ayer’, ‘what’ like, ‘wuht’. And most of all, call your peers ’son’, ‘girl’, ‘cuz’ and ‘bro’.

Tips

  • Sorry light blondes and redheads and paler skinned girls; the street/ghetto look is not for you. The type of people who look best with this look are african americans, mexicans, and olive-skinned people.
  • Bright colors look good with this look, but NOT pastels. Neon green and pink and blue are the best.
  • Big hoop earrings and silver or gold bangle bracelets look best with this style.
  • Don’t be afraid of anybody. A street attitude is very important. You have to be bad and fearless!
  • The best kind of shoes are nike low and high dunks, or big, bright gold high tops. Never get Converse brand shoes or Vans. Get Baby Phat shoes and other ghetto brands.

Warnings

  • If you are lighter skinned with lighter hair, take precautions. Some people will will tease you, and maybe call you a ‘wangster’, or some other name for a white person who acts ‘black’. But, don’t let some teasing bring you down! Just rock your style and eventually people will stop teasing you.
  • You may give a bad first impression on teachers/adults
  • The style may get you into trouble with real gangsters.

How to Dress Like a Tomboy

If you’re a girl who’d rather keep it simple than dress to impress, follow these steps and end up looking like just one of the guys.

Steps

  1. Wear shoes. Starting from the bottom, wear tennis shoes or sneakers — Nike, DC, Kangaroos, Etnies, and Vans are always fine.
  2. Wear either basketball shorts, cargo shorts, regular shorts that go to your knees/pants, camouflage pants, or blue jeans. Avoid skirts.
  3. Don’t forget a shirt. Up top, put on something loose-fitting and plain. T-shirts are always a safe choice. Hoodies are an exellent choice
  4. Consider topping it off with a baseball cap.

Tips

  • Tomboys aren’t just about their clothes, its their personality too! Play video games, sports, stand up for yourself, etc.
  • Avoid little girly girl dresses!
  • You can get away with wearing leggings and a denim skirt in warmer weather but don’t have a very short denim skirt.
  • Do not be afraid to shop in the boys department.

Warnings

  • Not recommended if you don’t want to be remembered as “one of the guys”, it won’t help with your love life too much
  • If your asked to wear a dress to a fancy dinner or party you might have to just that one time because if you went in your torn jeans and Nike-T-shirt people who are wearing the fancy dresses are giving you strange looks. Just pick out a dress that isn’t to girly, sexy, any girly colours you don’t like or anything that doesn’t suit you. Pick the dress that is right for you. This doesn’t apply if your going to a mates party, then you can get away with wearing whatever you want. Or just wear a pair of nice pants that can be considered formal and a blouse or shirt with a beautiful picture or pattern.

Things you might or will need

  • Boyish Clothes
  • Friends to hang out with

How to Dress Classy for a New College Guy

Be yourself. Be comfortable. Don’t try to dress like everyone else.

Steps

  1. Pick a look you are comfortable with (urban, indie, prep, etc.) and then plan to back off from it a bit. You don’t want to look like you are wearing a costume, but you should still carry a somewhat unique style that you identify yourself by. Don’t fall into style grooves! Have a somewhat varied wardrobe! Don’t wear ALL Hollister or ALL Famous Stars and Straps. You can wear those brands but don’t go OVER-BOARD. Be original!
  2. Invest in a trusty pair of denim jeans. Denim is the most versatile piece of clothing you own, and you should own at least ONE pair that you just cannot part with. It is imperative they fit you impeccably (make sure they meet the top of your shoe when sitting). Check out brands such as Lucky, Guess, Rock and Republic, True Religion, and (if you don’t want to spend as much!) Levi’s like the 514’s or BDG’s for tried and true bargain buys. Avoid plain denim jeans!; look for either colors (black, white, brown) or denim that has a good wash or fade to give it a dynamic look. Skinny guys look great in slim fit jeans, and boot cut jeans are popular as well these days. Buy girl jeans only if they completely pass as guy jeans or you are having a midlife crisis.
  3. Shoes - they are sweet but don’t go too overboard. This guide is for guys. Women get out of here! Repeat after me: we do not own a shoe rack full of shoes! If so, DONATE. For instance, Bapes or Bathing Apes are sick but they do not match with anything! They are a collector’s item, not for daily wear. Wear-ability is a must; get a color scheme that matches with what you have! Get something a little unique. Try a new style of Nike’s SB’s or AF1’s, or try a new scheme of Onitsuka Tigers! Do NOT get Vans. They are lame. So are many other skate shoe brands. Think of all those guys wearing black and white DC’s, Fallen, DVS, or the many other cookie cutter brands. Everyone has them. Style is sexy. Style is Brad Pitt. Style is NOT some skater model in a Mervyn’s catalog. Case closed.
  4. Colors - they have to match your skin. And get a variety! Verify color schemes with a trusty girl you trust yourself to trust. Trust … trust trust trust … trust me on this one!
  5. If you wear glasses, choose the kind with a thicker, more manly frame–not a wimpy one. Go to a reputable place and have a saleswoman help you pick out a flattering pair. NOT, she wants your money. Once again bring that girl from before along to help pick a pair, or ask if you would just look better with contacts. Tell her you will tab the beer for her party and you will get unforeseen benefits from being friends.
  6. Don’t wear camoflauge unless you get more action than Wilt Chamberlain. (Look him up)
  7. Do not go sleeveless unless you are at home, the pool/beach or the gym. Jersey’s can look great if you’ve got the guns … dude. Same with tanks, which can look hella good in the summer. Check out Urban Outfitters or American Apparel for tank tops.
  8. If your pants are baggy, wear a tighter shirt. WRONG This will make you look out of proportion! The proportion should be 1:1. Equally baggy (or non baggy) shirts with equally baggy (or non baggy) pants. You don’t see indie kids with baggy shirts along with their tight pants. Tight to tight, baggy to baggy! Make sure your shirt comes down a little past the waist/belt line of your pants.
  9. Do not try to pass off athletic clothes such as sweatpants or sweatshirts as real clothes unless you are a serious athlete or a trainwreck sorority coed.
  10. Dress for the occasion. Common sense. If you are in doubt, get your fly-est outfit (collar if above 20 years old, no matter if you are under 20) and go with it. So what if the night turns sour and you end up playing Jenga with your study buddies on a Friday. You have a washing machine, even if you don’t have a life.
  11. On shorts. I don’t suggest cargo in any instance. Volcom’s chinos NEVER fail to meet expectations. They fit anyone and they come in a variety of fitting colors and patterns that tie in with anyone’s style. They last and they go with everything! Get a couple pairs! Fine, get cargos, but the brand DOES count in this instance.
  12. Get a robe for the morning after.
  13. Wear a belt. Cloth belts are typically shunned upon. Hugo Boss makes a good belt. Make sure it is wide enough to fill in the loop space, you don’t want a shifty belt.
  14. Shower daily, if not twice a day since you should be working out either to maintain an Adonis body for the ladies or to achieve it!
  15. Get striped shirts that are in unique color/pattern combinations!
  16. Have an assortment of collared shirts for more formal nights out to a banquet or club. Get more neutral styles for the office/professional arena.
  17. Good sunglasses is a pair that fit with the shape and contours of your face! Consult a girl here if in doubt.
  18. Polos - most guys look good in them. Lacoste makes THE polo, but it fades very quickly and is vastly overpriced ($75!) American Apparel Pique Polos are your best bet! Last, fit great, look very high end, and come in a larger variety. Sorry it doesn’t come with a gator/penguin/bird/elephant stitching you logo fiends.
  19. Tees - less logo, look for FIT according to your body and wardrobe, and design. Brand doesn’t matter. Get a few neutral ones, get a few design-driven ones, get a few striped ones, get a few logo-driven ones, all in different colors.
  20. Winter - get a peacoat if you live East Coast, get some sweaters than match with your collared shirts, (look for stylish cardigans or V-necked sweaters). Get a couple hoodies with a zip fly that are UNIQUE and match your colors. You will be wearing this a lot. Get another pair of jeans.
  21. Avoid strip mall stores and LL Bean. Check out the mall, H&M, shopping centers, and thrift stores ONLY if you stay picky. Oftentimes people run out of Buffalo Exchange or Goodwill with a wall of shit they end up never wearing. Be pessimistic when shopping. If it isn’t completely convincing don’t convince yourself otherwise!
  22. Remember personality and your bank account count a lot more than this. But fashion is important for first impressions and being confident in yourself to go out and do your thang. Word

How to Parkour

Basically, Parkour is a natural method to train the human body to be able to move forward quickly making use of the environment that’s around us at any given time. This ‘art of displacement’ require neither specific structure nor accessory for its practice. The body is the only tool. It’s an athletic discipline accessible to all, because it combines all the natural skills of the human body: running jumping, climbing etc. It’s a discipline that permits exploration of the potential offered by your body. It’s about being able to face the obstacles with which you are presented, whether they be in the natural environment or in the urban environment, in a search for movement that combines effectiveness and control. The necessary equipment is simply a T-shirt, a pair of light jogging-type trousers, and a pair of running shoes.

Steps

  1. Get in shape! Being in shape is the most important aspect of parkour. If you are not in shape, then you will get seriously injured. You can get in shape by doing 5 simple things, running a lot, doing push ups, pull ups, dips, and core strength training. These will all improve your endurance in a parkour situation, and help you not to get injured, if you ever have to try something risky, like a fall.
  2. Buy your clothes. However, know that there is no perfect pair of shoes or pants or shorts. It’s simply what you can move in freely and won’t hinder any movement. But some recommendations are:
    • Climbing pants, since they allow you to move freely, durable, fits well, and doesn’t get in your way. Gramacci, Prana stretch Zion pants (very good), North Face, and Arborwear are recommended.
    • Buy shoes that are good for running (no skating shoes), that can grip various surfaces, has good shock absorption (forefoot absorption is great!), and you may want good toe bumpers, since it cushions those cat leaps. The shoes must be snug or else you’re greatly increasing your risk of injury on landings. Nike Air Pegasus, Adidas Nova, and Montrail Masai are good.
    • Shirts doesn’t have to be anything fancy, but it’s good to have a sweat wicking type. REI and running shoe stores have these.
  3. Start slowly, so that you will not get injured, even if you think that you are not getting hurt, you may need to think of some of the long term effects of the things you are doing to your body. You need to condition and make your body used to doing certain things without over stretching or bruising it.
  4. Learn the shoulder roll, the shoulder roll is one of the most basic but useful tools in your parkour tool box. A shoulder roll is a forward roll diagonal across your back over the shoulder. So if you are a doing one on the right side you would bring your arm close to your body and tuck your head and neck close to your chest, and roll over your right shoulder and coming up onto your feet at the end. The reason you roll diagonally is to reduce the damage to your back, and spine. Shoulder rolls are very important because they reduce the impact of any kind of landing, by converting the downward motion of a fall into forward motion, where you can easily begin to run again.
  5. After you have learned the basic shoulder roll, practice vaults. These help you clear obstacles easily and in speed. A vault should essentially keep your forward motion going while you are clearing an obstacle. After that, start training jumps from about 3 ft. You should never jump off anything higher than you yourself can jump. This is because if you repeatedly land on your legs from extensive heights you will damage your knees, but if you train 1000 low falls, than you will be able to do 1 high fall.
  6. Practice always, and after you have mastered those three basic things above, move on to harder, and more complicated moves that can eventually help you clear obstacles more quickly and efficiently. You can find all kinds of moves and, training methods at http://www.americanparkour.net/ or http://www.parkournorthamerica.com/

Tips

  • Always have water.
  • Joining an acrobatics or gymnastics class would really help condition your body.
  • Most of the clothes listed here could be found at REI and running stores.

Warnings

  • Don’t skip the first steps. It’s very important to have a stong and able body to parkour. You can tear muscles and fracture bones easily if you start complicated moves and jumps too soon (speaking from experience).

How to Be FashionXcore

What began as an insult for wanna-be hardcore fans who care more about dress than music, FashionXcore peeps still listen to all their hardcore and post-hardcore groups, but they have another style of dress, rather than pulling the rough and tough guy hardcore (hxc) look.

Steps

  1. Listen to the music! Remember, there is a difference between hardcore and metal, even though there are bands that mix hardcore and metal. These bands, Avenged Sevenfold for instance, are known as metalcore or hardcore. There is also a difference between hardcore and hardcore punk, even though that what most people refer to hardcore these days is infact metalcore.
  2. Buy the clothes. This part is really easy, just wear tight dark jeans or pants and either tight hardcore band T-shirts or hoodies. The T-shirts and hoodies should (in order of popularity) be either black, white or any bright color. If you are brave, you can have one, and only one, pink T-shirt. Go to stores like Rockett Clothing, Urban Outfitters, H&M and American Apparel. Hot Topic is a must though.
  3. #Dye your hair. While it might be enough to just dye your hair black, don’t stop there. It’s much more FashionXcore to add a stripe of red or a patch of blond. The most hardcore way to do it is to dye it all black and then pick 2 to 4 patches and bleach those patches. Also some other ideas for your hair is to dye your hair black or blonde and put one coon tail in it. And the most popular hairstyle is to have 2 tone colors usually blonde and black/brown or brown/black and blonde.
  4. Buy and use a pink carabiner key chain. Keep it on a belt loop.
  5. Get facial piercings. Usually the lips or septum. Also get gauges.
  6. Buy and wear Vans slip-ons. You won’t wear these to concerts, but they’re good for everything else. Always wear socks that match your shoes. Only wear white socks if you really have to and then only when wearing white shoes. Converse are also acceptable. Nike Dunks are very in.
  7. Buy a belt that is thick and white or buy a white studded belt.
  8. Act a little like a conceited girly bitch, just a little. Sometimes turn your knees towards each other. Let your wrist go limp, but only when the palm is facing upwards. Also, turn your head to the side and cast your eyes down.
  9. Act manly, from the knees up anyway. Feel self-confident. If you have problems with women keep it to yourself. If you don’t have a girlfriend don’t act like you’re in a rush to get one, be confident that you’ll find one eventually. Keep your head up and maintain eye contact. Develop a manly laugh and use it often. Slap people on the back.
  10. Now all that’s left is to go to hardcore/metalcore shows all the time and be excited about the cool the band that’s coming to town.

Tips

  • Be yourself.
  • Do your best.
  • Never let anyone tell you what you can or can’t do.
  • Cut the fingers off of your gloves.
  • Act tough even if you don’t feel it.
  • Learn to hardcore dance and karate chop your way through a mosh pit like a retarded idiot.
  • Get whooped on by 40 year old long-haired metal heads who stare at you wondering what the heck is wrong with the youth today.

Warnings

  • Never do drugs, even if they are FashionXcore drugs.
  • Try not to be too sarcastic.

How to Get Fresh (for Men)

Contrary to popular belief, getting ‘fresh’ is not easy, although all the rappers would lie to you so you think it is. This is a how to guide to make it easier for yourself. There are a few parts; hygiene, clothes, and attitude.

Steps

  1. Be clean. Shower every morning, shampoo and condition. Use deoderant.
  2. Teeth hygiene is important also. Brush, floss, and use mouth wash, at least twice a day.
  3. Smell nice. An inexpensive cologne will usually suffice, but avoid things like TAG, AXE, Brut, or any other cheap, overpowering, smell.
  4. Start dressing nice. Buy yourself a nice pair of Nike Dunks or SB’s (high or low top doesn’t matter) or some Bapes. Air Force 1’s are good, too. KEEP YOUR KICKS CLEAN! Keep the laces loose. Also, get some shirts that match well with what you wear.
  5. Do not spill food and drinks on your clothes or shoes.
  6. Do not have sweat patches under your arms.
  7. Do not look oily or greasy.
  8. Be yourself. If you are trying to be clean to attract someone, and they don’t like you for who you are, they are not for you.

Warnings

  • This is not for people who do not wish to waste large amounts of their money on clothes, shoes and colognes.

How to Get New Clothes, Shoes, and Accessories Without Spending a Ton of Money

Is your wardrobe in need of a cleanup? Are you tired of spending your money on stuff you won’t wear after a few weeks? If so, you’ve come to the right place. You CAN have stylish clothes, shoes, and accessories. It’s just a matter of thinking wisely and making the right decisions. Soon you’ll have the wardrobe you’ve always dreamed of!! :)

Steps

  1. The best place to shop for brand name clothing is Plato’s Closet. Not only does it supply clothes from stores like Hollister, Abercrombie, American Eagle, Aeropostale and more, but it’s also affordable and won’t ruin your budget. Plato’s Closet features gently used clothing from different types of stores.
  2. Find your style. If you’re into goth, shop at Hot Topic. If you’re more of a preppy girl, Abercrombie is the best choice. Hollister has more of a surfer-cali feel to it. Aeropostale, Wet Seal, and dEliA’s are all stores with comfy, cheap, and stylish clothing. But of course, it’s always fun to shop at other stores to have a unique look.
  3. Shoes! Payless is a great choice for cool shoes. Claire’s usually sells accessories, but you can also find some cute flats there, too. Some must-have brands of shoes are Nike, Adidas, Etnies, DC, UGGs, and Pumas, just to name a few. Go for a lost-lasting pair of sneakers for everyday, a comfy pair of boots for the winter, a couple of flats in the spring and fall, and a pair of Adidas sandals and flip-flops for the summer.
  4. Don’t limit yourself to shop at clothing chains like Old Navy and Aerie. Superstores such as Target and Wal-Mart offer a wide selection of clothes, shoes, and accessories. Shop at your local superstore for discounts and clearances.
  5. Accessories top your outfit off and adds a little bling. Claire’s is an excellent choice, where you can buy earrings, bracelets, necklaces, rings, headbands, and more. But first, snag some diamond studs that will complement any outfit. Other than that, go crazy!

Tips
